Celebrating Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important Islamic festivals celebrated around the world. It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting observed by Muslims. Eid al-Fitr is a time of celebration and happiness, where Muslims gather with their families and friends to share their joy.

The preparations for Eid al-Fitr start a few days before the actual festival. Muslims clean their houses and decorate them with colorful lights and ornaments. As in Malaysia, Muslims from different states prepare their own unique dishes. Some of the common traditional dishes are lontong in Johor and Selangor, ketupat in Kedah and Perlis, and lemang in Pahang and Perak.

The Prophet's practice is a Sunnah, which implies it sets a good example for others to follow.  Here are some Sunnah's we could practice on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri:

  1. Recite the ‘takbir’
  2. Bathe on the morning of Eid
  3. Put on perfume
  4. Eat a little before Eid prayer
  5. Wear our best outfit
  6. Walk to the mosque for Eid prayer
  7. Wish others in celebrating Eid

The Eid prayer consists of two rakats (units), and it is followed by a sermon delivered by the imam (the religious leader of the mosque).

After the prayer, Muslims exchange greetings of "Eid Mubarak" (Blessed Eid) with one another and hug each other as a sign of brotherhood and love. Usually, they give money to their children and family members. The rest of the day is spent visiting friends and relatives, feasting on delicious food, and spreading happiness.

Eid al-Fitr is a time to forgive and forget, to strengthen relationships, and to renew one's commitment to the values of Islam. It is also a time to remember the less fortunate and share one's blessings with them. Muslims are encouraged to give charity (Zakat al-Fitr) before the Eid prayer, which is distributed among the poor and needy.

In conclusion, Eid al-Fitr is a joyous occasion for Muslims around the world. It is a time to celebrate the end of Ramadan, to express gratitude for the blessings of Allah, and to connect with loved ones. The festival is a testament to the unity, love, and compassion that Islam fosters among its followers.
