Lailatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr, known as the Night of Power. It is believed to be the night on which the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW by the Angel Jibril. The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is not known, but it occurs on an odd night that falls in the last 10 days of Ramadan.

The night of al-Qadar is the night in which Allah bestows great mercy to His creation and when their fate is decreed. The night is so phenomenal that any deed done on it is multiplied. This is based on the statement of Allah SWT in the Quran:

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ ﴿١﴾ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ ﴿٢﴾ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ (٣)

“Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”

Surah al-Qadr (1-3)

Muslims around the world prefer to spend the last 10 days of Ramadhan in seclusion (i'tikaf) by staying in the mosque and refraining from engaging in this worldly affairs, where they focus completely on worshiping Allah SWT and

seeking forgiveness and repentance during this night that considered as meritorious.

When Sayyidah ‘Aishah RA asked the Prophet SAW, "O Messenger of Allah, if it is Laylatul Qadr, then what should I supplicate with?" He replied with the notable dua:

اللهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ، فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

"O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me."

[Reported by al-Tirmidhi (3513), Ibn Majah (3850) and Ahmad (25384)][Imam al-Tirmidhi graded this hadith as hasan sahih. Meanwhile, Sheikh Shu'aib al-Arna'outh judged the chain of narrators of this hadith as sahih and its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy)]

Therefore, all of the good deeds (ie. giving charity, helping others, and showing kindness and forgiveness) during this holy month are a reminder to the Muslims to to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in both their religious and daily lives. However, this is to remind Muslims that this attitude should not be limited during Ramadan but should be continued throughout the year. By doing so, Muslims hope to attain the blessing of Allah and reward in this life and in the hereafter.
