SAFETY IN RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES

TIPS KESELAMATAN | BAHAGIAN KESELAMATAN

In May 2022, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) ordered all public universities to review the security aspects of their respective facilities, especially buildings related to students. Every university management, especially the residential college, needs to ensure the safety of the premises and Kolej 10 UPM always looks comprehensively at that aspect to avoid unwanted incidents happening to students during their stay at the college. Every year, the management through the OSH committee looks at and evaluates the existing model, submits suggestions for improvement, including health and safety aspects for disabled people (OKU).

The University Safety Division (BKU) also strongly emphasizes the role of the students themselves who are responsible for maintaining discipline for their safety. Among the rules contained in the residential college rules include:-

  1. Students are not allowed to leave / enter the residential college area after 12.00 midnight.
  2. Male students are not allowed to enter the female student block area or vice versa.
  3. Cooking is not allowed in the college rooms.
  4. It is not allowed to use electrical appliances such as water heaters and rice cookers in the room.
  5. Male and female students are not allowed to be alone in quiet or dark places that cause suspicion.
  6. It is not allowed to bring outsiders in / stay in the college room without permission.
  7. Visitors entering the college are required to pick up a Visitor's Pass at the Control Post or a letter of permission to visit from the college.
  8. Room doors and windows should always be locked before leaving the room and when sleeping.
  9. Fan switches, lights and plugpoints should be turned off before leaving the room.

In conclusion, the college management, students and fellows should take proactive measures to ensure personal safety. The safety and well-being of students while in the College 10 area is a priority and is always taken seriously. Accidents that occur must be avoided in order to maintain the well-being and welfare of the students. There is a Malay proverb that says 'Regret first income regret later it's useless'. Therefore, incidents that have happened either inside or at other universities need to be taken as guidelines to avoid casualties and unwanted things from happening.
