Universiti Putra Malaysia's Residential Colleges and their Brief History

UPM Serdang campus

At UPM Serdang's main campus, UPM provides 9 residential colleges for the accommodation of more than 3000 students. Each residential college offers a variety of complete and modern facilities to meet the needs of students.

Most of the residential colleges have internet access, daily cleaning, facilities for sewage system and various other facilities that provide convenience to the students. The university is also very concerned about special students. There are a number of special spaces that are renovated and equipped with facilities that suit the needs of special students so that their life on campus is guaranteed.

The university is also very committed to guaranteeing the safety and security of UPM residents. Thus, the campus environment is fully protected by security officers who are dedicated in carrying out their duties. The parking area is also fully protected to ensure the safety of the vehicles of UPM students and staff.

 

List of College Names and Their History

Tun Dr. College Ishmael

Tun Dr. College Ismail (KTDI) is one of the earliest colleges built on the UPM Serdang campus. KTDI which used to be known by the nickname "Third" which means 'third' is the third college developed after Kolej Mohamad Rashid and Kolej Kedua. The construction process started from February 1973 and was fully completed in July 1975.

The new name of this college is taken in conjunction with the name of the country's respected figure, Tun Dr. Ismail, the second Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, as a tribute to his services and stature as one of the country's authoritative leaders. College Name Tun Dr. Ismail was officially used on January 1, 1995.

 

Chancellor's College

Established in 1973, it was formerly known as Kolej Kediaman Ke empat and Kolej Jelapang (starting in 1975) because the student dormitory blocks were named after the types of rice, namely Murni, Masria, Malinja and Mahsuri. In addition, the symbol of the Fourth Residential College itself is based on a rice stalk which is one of the important entities in the country's agriculture.

At the celebration of the College's Two Decades, dated 20 September 1995, the name of the Fourth Residential College was changed to the Chancellor's College and was officiated by the Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia), TYT Tun Dato' Seri Dr. Haji Hamdan Sheikh Tahir.

Universiti Putra Malaysia has restructured the organization of the University Residential College and has combined the Chancellor's College and the Sixth College under one administration and adopted the name of the Chancellor's College starting on 15 June 2019.

 

Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah College

KOSASS is a residential college that houses members of the Reserve Officer Training Team (PALAPES). However, there are also public students who are also placed in KOSASS.

The administration of KOSASS is led by Lt. Mr. Associate Prof Gs Dr Hasmadi bin Ismail PSSTLDM as principal, assisted by the college manager, Mrs. Hhh. Kalthom Binti Abu Bakar, along with 6 support staff.

 

Za'ba Reverend College

In 1986, Za'ba Clergy College was known as the Ninth Residential College or Junior College. With the concept of naming five residential blocks namely Arif, Cendekiawan, Pintar, Bijaksana and Bestari, Tn. Haji Ali took the initiative to change the name of the Ninth College to Za'ba Clergy College.

Moving on to the history of the establishment of Kolej Tun Perak, it was previously known as Kolej Kediaman Kelapan. All the blocks in KTP have been named in conjunction with the names of famous heroes in Malay history in the past. Among the warrior names used are Jebat, Lekiu, Lekir, Tuah and also Kasturi. KTP is the first college to break the tradition of naming residential colleges at UPM by placing human values in the right place.

In 2019, Kolej Pendeta Za'ba was merged with Kolej Tun Perak starting in June 2019 and the restructuring of the principal and administration of the college was made.

 

Tenth College

First established on April 1, 1999, Kolej Sepuluh began to take steps forward as a newly developed college at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Under the main leader, Dr. Marry Huang as the first principal, various initiatives have been taken to ensure that Kolej Sepuluh continues to move forward in terms of academics and co-curriculum on par with other existing colleges.

Kolej Sepuluh also started its service by housing male and female students but the situation changed in 2002 by only allowing male students to reside in this college. The college also accommodates students who are mostly from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Design & Architecture.

In 2019, Kolej 10 merged with Kolej 11, which is a college that houses female students from the Faculty of Engineering and FRSB and kept the name Kolej 10 as their combined name.

 

Tan Sri Aishah Ghani College

The historic moment that marked the sacred date began on 22 July 1997 when a new residential college was established, namely the Universiti Putra Malaysia Matriculation College (UPM) or better known as KOMAT. From the session of May 2000/2001, this college was opened to students from various diploma programs which later changed its name to Kolej Tiga Belas and the name Kolej Matrikulasi (KOMAT) only remained in memories.

Since July 2019, Kolej Tiga Belas has merged with Kolej Mohammad Rashid (KMR) as part of UPM's Governance Transformation program. This change gives a new development to the image and identity of College Thirteen.

The leadership also experienced changes starting in 2001 by Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Zakaria Hussin, Y.M Dr. Tengku Azam Shah Tengku Mohammad, Prof. Associate Dr. Arifin Abdu. On 8 June 2022, the Board of Directors of Universiti Putra Malaysia agreed to name College Thirteen as Kolej Tan Sri Aishah Ghani and until now Kolej Tan Sri Aishah Ghani is administered by Prof. Assoc. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Shukri Muhammad Noor with full dedication and concern for all the people of this College.

 

Tan Sri Mustaffa Babjee College

College Tujuh Belas began to be developed on 10 July 2003 along with the construction of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with an estimated cost of RM 202 million and was fully completed on 10 January 2006.

In general, this college accommodates students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences as well as the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. However, there are also a handful of students from other faculties in the Universiti Putra Malaysia campus who live here. In total, there are 4 student residential building blocks, namely block A, block B and C for female students and block D for male students.

On 26 June 2022, the renaming of Seventeen College to Tan Sri Mustaffa Babjee College in conjunction with the late Tan Sri Ahmad Mustaffa Babjee. The name change is an initiative taken by the UPM management in an effort to rebrand the names of residential colleges inspired by the names of prominent figures related to the student's field of study.

 

College Twelve

Twelve College is one of the 17 residential colleges at Universiti Putra Malaysia. Even so, Kolej Dua Belas is part of Kolej Serumpun because of its unique position among the other three colleges, namely; College Fourteen, College Fifteen and College Sixteen.

Kolej Dua Belas, Universiti Putra Malaysia was opened in May 2000, along with the opening of Kolej Empat Belas. Initially, this residential college was open to female students only. Later, the placement was opened to male students. The placement and maintenance of facilities for Serumpun College is under the responsibility of PJS Development Sdn. Bhd. completely.

On February 1, 2018, College Twelve was merged with College Five and the name of the college was College Twelve. On 1 September 2019 for the 2019/2020 Session, Kolej Dua Belas has taken over the full placement from PJS Development Sdn. Bhd.

 

UPM Bintulu campus

Sri Rajang College

Sri Rajang College was established in 2002 after taking the name of Sungai Rajang which is the longest river in Malaysia. Began operation on 5 November 2001 to accommodate the first intake of 154 students in conjunction with the re-opening of Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus. The college administration is supported by a Principal and assisted by the College management, fellows and the College Representative Council (MPK).

The college has 10 blocks, 5 blocks for male residents and 5 blocks for female residents. Each block has 4 levels, each level has 18 to 22 rooms, each room accommodates 2 to 4 people.

Sri Rajang College provides a variety of facilities, to ensure its residents enjoy a comfortable, safe and conducive environment while also improving the generation of minds and sharpening students' creativity in an effort to produce quality and skilled students. Each block has been equipped with a rest room, television, sofa, iron, pantry and water dispenser for daily use and activities.
